RECOVERY CONTINUES

American Reproductive Centers broke ground Monday on a new state-of-the-art fertility clinic and surgical center in Palm Springs, nearly one year after a bombing destroyed the original facility and set off a community-wide effort to help the clinic survive and rebuild.

EL PASEO BAR APPROVED

The planned Rock'n Avenue Bar at 73-730 El Paseo received a crucial vote to move forward Tuesday evening.

Attendees cheered and the applicant and commissioners shook hands as the Palm Desert Planning Commission voted 4-0 Tuesday to approve Patrick Masur’s Rock’n Avenue Bar at 73-730 El Paseo. After a six-week recess, the commission approved the project with 53 conditions.

AGRICULTURE PROGRAM SHUTTERED

The program is in its 50th year, and students regularly participate and win awards at the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival.

Declining enrollment was cited as the reason for the closure at Indio HIgh School, with an estimated 30 students interested in the program next year. Members of the Indio City Council said they planned to reach out to the school’s principal and the district in hopes of reversing the decision.

MEETING PUSHBACK

The Palm Desert Parks and Recreation Committee voted 6-1 Tuesday to recommend that the city council reverse a proposed ordinance that would cut the panel’s meetings from once a month to once every two months — a change members say was made without their input and would undermine their ability to advise on parks projects.

BUDGET WARNING

Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez, spoke to about 100 residents who gathered to learn about the budget process and give their priorities.

Riverside County officials presented a $10 billion budget at a community workshop in Palm Desert last week, warning of financial pressures from potential state and federal funding cuts. County Executive Officer Jeff Van Wagenen said the county is facing rising costs and flattening revenues, making it difficult to predict the local economic future of a county with 2.5 million residents across 7,300 square miles.
