The Indio City Council voted Wednesday to impose an emergency 45-day moratorium on data centers, joining a regional debate over large-scale computing facilities that has drawn hundreds of protesters to a neighboring city’s council chambers.

The cost of building the planned 27-acre Dave Erwin Park has climbed to between $31 million and $35 million — roughly double early estimates of $15 million to $19 million — as the Palm Desert Parks and Recreation Committee heard Tuesday that the City Council has directed staff to proceed with a single-phase buildout.

ROAD DIET AHEAD

The Palm Springs City Council voted recently to approve construction documents and authorize staff to solicit bids for a reconfiguration of Racquet Club Road that would reduce the corridor from four travel lanes to two, adding a center turn lane and buffered bike lanes.
