NEW CHAPTER

A new bookstore will take over the former Oasis on Miles and AMP music venue.
The Indio City Council approved a commercial lease agreement that would bring the city’s first independent bookstore to downtown. The lease would allow Downtowne Bookstore, Inc. to occupy two city-owned buildings at 82713 and 82719 Miles Avenue, totaling about 3,456 square feet.

Palm Springs police released body-worn camera and drone footage Wednesday of the May 28 officer-involved shooting that killed a man armed with a knife, identifying him publicly for the first time as Gilberto Flores of Desert Hot Springs.

DECISION DELAYED

Conceptual design plans for the new Palm Desert library submitted by Richärd Kennedy Architects.
City staff told the Palm Desert City Council recently they are adding an extra round of interviews before recommending a design-build partner for the new library, pushing back the anticipated completion date and delaying a formal recommendation until September.

Palm Springs will hold seven community meetings starting Wednesday July 22 on a potential shift to a directly elected mayor. Meanwhile, an advocacy group renewed its request last week for an independent legal report and the city attorney said no comparable California city offers a legal precedent for the change.

VACANT BUILDING RULES

Under the vacant commercial property ordinance, buildings are considered vacant if at least 35% of their total floor area is unoccupied.
The Indio City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to adopt an ordinance requiring owners of vacant commercial, industrial, and office buildings to register their properties with the city and meet new maintenance and security standards.
