MAYOR PLAN OPPOSED

Palm Springs residents on Wednesday overwhelmingly spoke out against a proposal from a citizens’ group to move the city to a system of directly electing its mayor. Around a dozen residents voiced opposition during public comment at the regular City Council meeting, ahead of a broader discussion about the mayoral role.

ENFORCEMENT HARDENED

Against the backdrop of decreased funding for services and an increased reliance on enforcement at the state and national levels, the City of Palm Desert Thursday voted 5-0 to consider ending the last few exceptions in the city’s camping ban by which homeless people might avoid fines for sleeping outside in Palm Desert.

INDIO GROWING EAST?

City of Indio officials invited residents, commissioners, and other agencies to attend a public open house Thursday to learn about and comment on the city’s ongoing annexation study, which aims to bring more than 4,600 acres of unincorporated land east of the city into Indio’s boundaries, increasing the city’s size by about 20%.

PUBLIC ART PLAN

The city’s first public art commission, Desert Dessert by Michael Anderson, was placed in Civic Center Park in 1990.

The Palm Desert Cultural Arts Committee on Wednesday unanimously recommended that the City Council approve a multi-year public art plan that would bring new sculptures and murals to fire stations, the new library, a community park and major entry corridors throughout the city.
