The Palm Desert City Council on Thursday approved an energy substation project that will pave the way for new development in the city’s northern sphere.

Cpl. Hunter Lopez was killed in action during an airport attack in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2021 at the age of 22, but his family is looking to ensure his memory lives on through a fundraiser for the foundation that bears his name on Jan. 17.

MONUMENT MOVE

A statue of former Mayor Frank Bogert on horseback is loaded onto a city truck and driven away from City Hall in 2022.

The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission voted Thursday to relocate the statue of former Mayor Frank Bogert to the Village Green, accepting a proposal from the Palm Springs Historical Society with an amendment requiring an educational component addressing the controversy surrounding the memorial.

PARKS PUSH

Land bordered by Frank Sinatra Drive and Portola Road (at left) could someday contain housing, city buildings, and a regional sports park.

The Palm Desert Parks and Recreation Committee voted unanimously Tuesday morning to urge city leaders to expand the size of a planned regional park in the University Neighborhood and to strengthen language ensuring the park can support sports fields, lighting and extended hours of use.

Detached home prices fell 4% in Indio to $615,000 in December. The city was the only one in the valley that saw an increase in attached home prices. The average price for attached homes last month was about $294,000, an increase of 7% compared to last year.
