SKATE PARK SHIFT

The Palm Desert Parks and Recreation Committee voted Tuesday to recommend that the City Council shift the Civic Center skate park from a supervised model to an unsupervised one, hoping to boost usage and save portions of the roughly $88,000 annual cost of staffing the facility.

BUDGET BUFFER

The Desert Sands Unified School District Board of Education reviewed a financial report Tuesday showing the district in a comparatively strong position, with a 35% general fund ending balance that officials said provides a buffer as other districts face cuts. Nearby Coachella Valley Unified School District last month approved more than $25 million in reductions over the next three years to remain solvent.

HISTORIC DESIGNATION

An Albert Frey-designed church at 605 South Riverside Drive in Palm Springs was recommended for Class 1 status this week.

The Palm Springs Historic Site Preservation Board on Tuesday approved a request from Dezart Performs to designate the First Church of Christ Scientist as a Class 1 site. Modernist architect Albert Frey designed the church at 605 South Riverside Drive, which held its first service on March 17, 1957. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
