RESOURCE CONCERNS

The Indio Sustainability Commission voted Monday to formally add the oversight of data centers to its official work plan, citing mounting concerns over the facilities’ energy and water demands. The move comes as the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) faces increasing scrutiny over its handling of data center applications.

ZONING TENSIONS

Roughly 60 residents filled a room at the Palm Springs Convention Center Monday evening to hear about and discuss proposed zoning changes that could bring five-story buildings to commercial corridors near single-family neighborhoods, with residents voicing concerns over property values and building heights, sometimes in heated exchanges with city officials.

FAIRGROUNDS UPGRADES

An estimated $10 million investment is being made in the fairgrounds in Indio.

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors approved a $1.1 million project Tuesday to add water and electrical hookups to 42 RV parking spaces at the county fairgrounds in Indio. The improvements represent the latest phase in a five-year modernization effort at the 92-acre facility.

OUTPERFORMING AVERAGE

Palm Desert’s savings and investment accounts are still performing better than average, even as interest rates begin to cool, city finance staff told the Finance Committee on Tuesday. For the three months ending in December, the city earned about 4% on its investments — higher than what a standard five-year U.S. Treasury investment paid over the same period.
