The Indio City Council adopted an ordinance Wednesday giving the developer of the Citrus Ranch project up to 20 additional years to build out the long-planned community, despite pushback from residents who argued the project’s environmental review is outdated.

CANNABIS LOUNGE CHANGES

Palm Springs is moving toward allowing cannabis consumption lounges, regardless of size, to prepare and sell non-cannabis food and nonalcoholic beverages, host live entertainment and hold ticketed events under regulations authorized by a 2024 change in state law. The City Council approved the ordinance on first reading last month in a 5-0 vote.

Implementation of a new commercial compliance program in Palm Desert will proceed in phases, beginning with the El Paseo and Highway 111 corridor.
Palm Desert City Council members voiced support for a new commercial compliance program during a study session Thursday, as staff outlined that roughly 800 of the city’s approximately 4,600 businesses lack a required business license.

ELECTION OVER APPOINTMENT

The Palm Springs City Council voted 3-1 Thursday to proceed with the Nov. 3 general municipal election for District 2, rejecting an option to appoint Councilmember Jeffrey Bernstein to the seat and cancel the race, with Mayor Naomi Soto casting the dissenting vote.

The Indio Community Services Commission this week reviewed survey results from a July 29 to August 14 outreach effort, which revealed that 30% of respondents prioritize more shade, trees, and landscaping as their highest need, followed by roughly 25% favoring walking, biking, fitness, or sports amenities, and 17% requesting family-friendly spaces.
