SAVE THE SKIRTS?

The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation has asked the city to designate the palm trees lining Palm Canyon Drive as a historic site, arguing in a 115-page nomination that the trees’ dried-frond skirts are essential to a streetscape the City Council voted weeks earlier to begin trimming.

The Indio Planning Commission on Wednesday unanimously recommended approval of the second phase of the Grand Marketplace redevelopment, clearing the way for three commercial buildings on the shopping center’s Highway 111 frontage.

PARKS PRIORITIES
Connecting trails was identified as a priority by a Palm Desert committee earlier this month.
The Palm Desert Parks and Recreation Committee voted unanimously at its last meeting to approve the 2026-2027 annual work plan, naming trail connectivity enhancement, playground assessment and improvements, and a shade and resilience initiative as its top three priorities for the coming year.

EASTWARD EXPANSION
Four plans presented by staff vary the size of open space and conservation area in green, industrial land in blue, with only option 1B adding plans for housing, in orange.
Indio’s Planning Commission on Wednesday reached informal consensus favoring the largest of four proposed concepts for annexing 4,609 acres of unincorporated land east of the city to expand industrial and business development.
